Merwin and Myrna Lyng Family Mathematics Scholarship

The Merwin and Myrna Lyng Family Mathematics Scholarship is awarded to students who have officially declared a major in mathematics, have completed the usual calculus sequence, have at least a 3.25 G.P.A., and have the recommendation of the mathematics faculty.

The Lyngs

Lyng - web.jpgDr. Merwin Lyng earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Mayville State in 1954. His major was mathematics and minor was geography. He later earned a master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado (formerly Colorado State University). He then earned the Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.

Myrna (Dalzell) Lyng received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a major in English and a minor in library science in 1961. She earned a master’s degree in library science from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Lyng taught mathematics at Mayville State from 1958 to 1998. He served as chairman of the Division of Science and Mathematics for many years. An emeritus faculty member since retiring in 1998, Merwin participated in the faculty procession at Mayville State commencement for the 65th time in May of 2024.

Myrna was a librarian at Mayville State and also worked in public relations for the university. She continues to volunteer her services to proof articles and work on publicity items long after her retirement.

Merwin John Lyng, 92, died Sunday, September 8, 2024 at the Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, ND, under the care of Hospice. See the obituary.
