Biography
Education
Dr. Khwaja Hossain earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Sciences from Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University and a Master of Science in Genetics and Plant Breeding from Bangladesh Agricultural University, Bangladesh. He completed his Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, United Kingdom, as a recipient of the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship.
Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Hossain was awarded a fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and served as a postdoctoral researcher in the Faculty of Horticulture at Chiba University, Matsudo, Japan. Before joining Mayville State University in 2005, he held postdoctoral and senior research scientist positions in the Department of Plant Sciences at North Dakota State University (NDSU) in Fargo, North Dakota.
Throughout his academic and research career, Dr. Hossain has built extensive expertise in molecular genetics, plant sciences, and biotechnology, contributing to research programs spanning crop improvement, functional biomaterials, human health, and sustainable agricultural innovations.

Research Interests
Dr. Khwaja Hossain is a molecular geneticist whose research focuses on the innovative utilization of crop-derived products to improve human health and address climate-related challenges. His work integrates molecular biology, biomaterials, sustainable agriculture, and biomedical engineering to develop value-added applications from agricultural resources.
One of Dr. Hossain’s major research interests is the valorization of wheat bran, a byproduct of the milling industry that is rich in polysaccharides and phenolic compounds. He has successfully incorporated treated wheat bran into thermoplastic composites, demonstrating the potential to reduce carbon emissions from thermoplastic manufacturing by up to 30%. In addition, he has extracted arabinoxylan from wheat bran and engineered it into functional nanoparticles with promising applications in nucleic acid and drug delivery systems.
In the field of biomaterials and cancer research, Dr. Hossain has been developing mesh-like polymeric scaffolds that mimic the extracellular matrix of human tissues. These scaffolds provide a three-dimensional environment that supports the growth, proliferation, and study of cancer cells, contributing to advances in tissue engineering and cancer biology.
Dr. Hossain is also actively engaged in the study of plant-derived bioactive compounds. Using advanced analytical techniques such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), he is investigating compounds isolated from quinoa and cattail. His objective is to identify bioactive molecules with antifungal, antibacterial, and anticancer properties and to evaluate their effects on the growth and development of fungi, bacteria, and cancer cells.
More recently, Dr. Hossain has initiated a novel research program focused on stimulus-responsive drug delivery systems for the management of multiple chronic conditions (MCCs). This work utilizes polymers derived from chia seed mucilage to develop smart drug delivery platforms capable of co-delivering medications for diabetes and hypercholesterolemia. The system is designed to release therapeutic agents in response to physiological triggers, such as elevated glucose or cholesterol levels, enabling more precise and effective disease management.
