  4. B.S. in Biology

AFFORDABLE, FLEXIBLE, AND TRANSFER-FRIENDLY

The realm of Biology is large and expansive. The Bachelor of Science in Biology program allows students interested in biology to focus on their primary area of interest. Whether students are interested in pursuing careers in wildlife, teaching, medicine, or any of the multiple pre-professional paths, MSU has a route to get there

Mayville State’s biology program offers opportunities to get involved in biological research and actively participate in the biology/science community.

ADMISSION TO BIOLOGY PROGRAM

All admission criteria are monitored and enforced by the discipline faculty. Admission to the Biology major requires that the student:

  • Complete BIOL 150 and BIOL 151 with a minimum grade of “C” in each course.
  • Have an institutional cumulative GPA of at least 2.50.

  • Have satisfactory communication skills as demonstrated by successful completion of ENGL 110 and ENGL 120 or ENGL 125 with a minimum grade of “C” in each course.

  • Have satisfactory mathematics skills as demonstrated by successful completion of MATH 103 with a minimum grade of “C”.

  • Complete an oral interview with the discipline faculty.

Final approval of the discipline faculty is contingent upon their professional judgment following consideration of documentation and faculty assessment.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

For this degree, a minimum of 30 credit hours at the 300/400 level from Mayville State is required. In addition to general education requirements, the core major requirements, students will also complete a required minor. Online minor options include: business administration, sociology, mathematics, chemistry, accounting, and more. Students will work with their advisor to explore minor options to complement their career goals.

Students with a previously earned bachelor's degree will only need to complete the program pre-requisite courses, core biology degree requirements, and specialization.

TRANSFER-FRIENDLY

Mayville State University accepts transfer credit from regionally recognized accredited institutions of postsecondary education. All credit hours earned from the institutions that meet this criterion are accepted in transfer towards graduation degree credit hours.

Mayville State is working with the community and technical colleges in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wyoming, Arizona, and Washington. Below you will find a link to detailed transfer information from some of the institutions we have been working with. These are only sample articulations. Actual transfer credit granted will vary.

Find articulation agreements with Mayville State.

AFFORDABLE

Mayville State online and distance courses cost $330.19 per credit for tuition and fees (2024-2025), regardless of a student's state of residency. Please note, tuition is subject to change without notice. Books, lab kits, and materials are additional. Financial aid is available in the form of grants and loans. To see if you are eligible for financial aid, you first need to complete your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). When completing the form, list Mayville State University (Title IV code 002993) on your application.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

In many programs, research opportunities are limited to graduate students, but at Mayville State, we are focused on your success as an undergraduate. That is why our program offers you personalized class settings, up-to-date tools, and the opportunity for multiple research projects.
