Here's why Mayville State is right for Katelyn!

Why did you choose to attend Mayville State University?
I chose to attend Mayville State because I graduated from a small high school, and the large class sizes and anonymity at other universities intimidated me. It was also a financial decision - attending MSU was much more affordable.

What do you like best about the major you’re pursuing?
I love seeing how the things I learn in class show up in the everyday world. I like to look at a plant and know what’s going on inside of it. I like being able to draw parallels between my life and what I learn about a topic that superficially may not seem to have any relation to me, like marine worms. I also like knowing that my learning is never done. Science is constantly changing and developing, which keeps it challenging and interesting.

What do you like best about Mayville State in general?
My favorite thing about MSU is the individual attention instructors can offer. If I have a question, I don’t feel shy about asking during class or staying after in order to get the best out of my education. Because of that, I’ve gotten to know my professors quite well. I feel like they really care about my success. Shout-out to the MSU science faculty!

Do you participate in any activities related to your major/minor? Internships? Work Study? Other?
I work as a laboratory assistant in one of the research labs on campus, which I feel has helped me understand some of the topics we go over in various classes. I also feel it is going to give me a leg up when applying for future jobs or post-graduate education.

Have you had any unique opportunities, in or out of the classroom, while you’ve been enrolled at Mayville State?
I work as a laboratory assistant in one of the research labs on campus. At a bigger school, I don’t think I would have had that opportunity because of the sheer volume of students enrolled. I probably would be working somewhere completely unrelated to what I am interested in. I have also gotten the opportunity to really get to know my professors and become comfortable with them, due to smaller class sizes and having many of the same instructors for classes.

What MSU clubs, organizations, or athletic activities to you participate in?
I am the president of the Pre-professional Club and a member of Science Club.

How have these activities enhanced your college experience?
I have gotten pretty good at making popcorn by selling it for Science Club! It has also been good to get to know other students on campus, both within and outside of my majors, as I’m not very outgoing. Being involved in a few things has forced me to make friends, for which I am glad.

What has been your greatest moment as a Mayville State student?
My greatest moment was probably reviving the Pre-professional Club. It had existed in the past, but everybody graduated, so it became stagnant. One of my instructors asked me if I would be interested in starting it up again, so I did. We are still trying to get things running smoothly, but we are operational!

What does personal service mean to you?
To me, personal service means helping others, regardless of how it may benefit me or who is watching. It means going the extra mile for somebody simply because you care, just like the faculty and staff do at Mayville State.

What are your plans after graduating from Mayville State?
I plan to apply to medical school after graduation and study to become a doctor.
