What started as a desire to become a better hunter has led Detroit Lakes, Minn., native Reece Olcott to the unexpected opportunity to compete in both archery and trap shooting at Mayville State University.

Raised with a love for the outdoors, Olcott learned to enjoy hunting through his dad. Some of his favorite growing up memories involve spending time in the outdoors. Those experiences taught him patience, focus, and perseverance, qualities that now serve him well as a college athlete.

“I got started in archery and trap because I wanted to become a better shot for hunting,” Olcott said. “What began as a way to improve accuracy turned into something I really enjoy on its own.”

Along the way, Olcott had to relearn his shooting form to improve his performance. He credits Mayville State’s supportive team environment for helping him stay motivated and focused, especially in uncomfortable situations.

“Being part of a team holds me accountable and gives me something to look forward to every week,” said Reece, who is a team captain for Mayville State’s archery team.

Olcott emphasizes consistency in practice and competition, focusing on improving a little each week rather than becoming consumed by scores. One of the biggest lessons he has learned is how to move past mistakes and concentrate on the next shot.

Outside of competition, he continues to enjoy bow hunting, bird hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. Looking ahead, he hopes to use his shooting skills for years to come while pursuing his goal of owning a construction company.

“I never thought I would be a college athlete, let alone a dual-sport athlete,” Olcott said. “It’s a great way to meet new people and have fun doing it.”

His advice for young athletes is simple: focus on the fundamentals, practice consistently, be patient with your progress, and most importantly, enjoy the journey. As Olcott continues his collegiate career at Mayville State, the values he has learned in the outdoors continue to guide his success both on the range and in the classroom.
