John Murphy has been named head women’s and men’s golf coach at Mayville State University. Mayville State University Athletics announced last fall the addition of men’s and women’s golf to its intercollegiate athletics programs starting with the Fall Semester of 2023. Murphy’s duties in this position will begin immediately. He is currently employed with Mayville State University Coordinator of Institutional Effectiveness, a role he will continue to fill.

A graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., Murphy coached boys golf at Central Cass (Casselton, N.D.) High School in the late 1990s. He has extensive experience with conducting junior camps, as well as individual and group lessons.

“We are happy to have John Murphy join us in this new capacity,” said Mayville State University President Dr. Brian Van Horn. “He has shown his loyalty and commitment to Mayville State and the Mayville-Portland community through his volunteer efforts for a long time. He will be an excellent coach and mentor for students as he extends his leadership in this new endeavor for Mayville State Athletics.”

John Murphy is active with Mayville State University Athletics as vice president of the Comet Athletic Club booster organization and as statistician for Comet Athletics fall and winter sports.

“I am humbled and honored to be given the opportunity to coach golf at Mayville State,” said Coach Murphy. “I look forward to working with our student athletes to maximize their potential in the classroom and on the golf course. I can’t wait to get started!”
