The public is invited to join in celebrating with the Mayville State University women’s basketball team Wed., March 20 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the MSU Campus Center Foyer. The Comets recently made school history by the becoming the first women’s basketball team to compete in a national tournament. A short program will begin at 4:00 p.m. and will include remarks from school administrators, coaches, and players.

The Comets were one of 11 at-large selections to compete in the 22nd Annual State Farm-NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship held March 6-12 at the Tyson Event Center in Sioux City Iowa. A total of 32 teams participated. The Comets played Northwestern of Orange City, Iowa in the opening round of the tournament Wed., March 6. Mayville State came up short in a final score of 66-92.

The Mayville State team built an impressive résumé in 2012-2013. They experienced a 20-win season, multiple victories over nationally ranked opponents, and six weeks ranked in the top 25 national poll. Their final record for 2012-2013 is 20-6.

The Lady Comets are led by Head Coach Dennis Hutter. David Moe is his assistant coach, and Megan Groen and Hannah Wenaas are student assistants. Comet Chocolate Chippers are #1!

In conjunction with the national tournament, the Sioux City Journal sponsored the Division II Women’s Basketball NAIA Recipe Challenge, to determine the favorite recipe submitted by each of the national tournament teams. Voting was conducted online. With 8,100 votes, Comet Chocolate Chippers were the runaway winner. The award-winning Comet Chocolate Chippers will be served at the March 20 social.
