Building stronger communities through partnership

A university is more than a place of learning. It’s a partner in the life and future of its community. For Mayville State, that partnership extends to the towns and rural communities of Traill County and beyond, where “town and gown” relationships are very important to the region’s shared success.

Collaboration takes many forms. From economic development to workforce support, each effort reflects a shared commitment to improving quality of life for all residents. An example of this partnership is the university’s participation on the board of the Traill County Economic Development Commission. I currently serve as the university’s representative to the board and am grateful for the partnership and work of all members of the board, as well as Traill County EDC Executive Director Jim Murphy and Deputy Director Alyssa Short.

One of the most pressing issues currently being tackled through Mayville State’s collaboration with the Traill County EDC is housing. Like many rural communities across North Dakota and beyond, Traill County faces a need for more housing options.

Through the EDC, a county-wide survey was conducted. The purpose was to better understand existing conditions, identify gaps, and gather input directly from residents and employers. The results of the survey are informing follow-up efforts and strategies aimed at solutions.

This work is important not only for current residents, but also for attracting and retaining the workforce needed to support local businesses and services. Housing availability is closely tied to economic vitality, and by addressing this issue collaboratively we are working together to ensure that Traill County remains a place where people and live, work, and thrive.

Beyond strategic initiatives like housing and economic development, the everyday contributions of Mayville State students play a critical role in the region. Across Traill County, Mayville State students are members of the workforce, filling essential roles in healthcare facilities, schools, local businesses, service industries, and the agricultural industry. Their contributions help sustain operations, support community needs, and bring fresh perspectives and energy into workplaces. At the same time, these employment opportunities are helping students to have the financial resources they need while pursuing higher education.

Mayville State students are currently or have recently been helping area farmers, providing security at American Crystal Sugar, and working in area retail and hospitality businesses, healthcare facilities, and more. For the last few years, the crew that repairs roads in Traill County and Steele County during the summer months has been made up exclusively of Mayville State students. Our students not only meet critical staffing needs, but they also help to boost the region’s economic strength.

For many students, these employment opportunities also bolster their connection to the community. Internships, part-time jobs, and professional experiences often lead to long-term careers in the region, helping to address workforce shortages and reinforce the local talent pipeline. Mayville State is educating students and helping to build the next generation of community leaders and professionals who will contribute to the region’s future.

The benefits of strong “town and gown” relationships extend beyond economics and workforce development. Cultural, recreational, and educational partnerships enrich the lives of residents in countless ways. University events, performances, athletic competitions, and public programming bring people together, while community support enhances the student experience and fosters a welcoming environment. Many students cite their love for the community when expressing their satisfaction with their Mayville State education.

When institutions and residents work together toward a common goal, success is inevitable. We at Mayville State are truly grateful for the many ways in which our area communities support and collaborate with the university. The partnerships formed are a win-win. By aligning resources, sharing expertise, and maintaining open lines of communication, the university and community partners are addressing challenges and creating opportunities. Together, we are building stronger, more resilient communities and enhancing the quality of life for all who live, work, and learn in the region. In a world where collaboration is more important than ever, the ongoing relationship between the university and the neighboring communities is vital. Together, we are creating a place where opportunity grows, connections deepen, and quality of life continues to flourish for all.
