MoenT1.jpgMayville State University Athletic Director Rocky Larson has announced the establishment of shooting sports as a new athletic offering at the university, expanding opportunities for student engagement and competition. This move supports lifelong participation in a sport many students have already come to enjoy when they enroll as college students.

The program is launching with club shooting sports opportunities during the spring, followed by the official start of varsity competition in the Fall Semester of 2026. A dedicated shooting range located near Mayville will serve as the home facility for practices and competition.

Tom Moen has been hired as head shooting sports coach. Moen is a retired physical plant employee at Mayville State who is familiar with the university, and he brings expertise and a lifelong passion for the sport to the position. His experience and enthusiasm will be important as he guides the program during its early development.

“Shooting sports continue to grow in popularity across the region and the nation, particularly among high school students,” said Mayville State University President Dr. Brian Van Horn. “By adding this program, Mayville State is creating a pathway for students who wish to continue participating in a sport they’ve enjoyed for years, while strengthening their sense of belonging on campus. For many students who competed in trap, skeet, or other shooting disciplines during high school, the new program offers an opportunity to remain actively involved while pursuing their college education, and I don’t know a better coach/ambassador than Tom, and his wife, Cheryll, to grow this sport.”

Shooting sports are widely recognized as a lifelong activity that emphasizes discipline, focus, personal responsibility, and sportsmanship.

“I’m excited to see something new and meaningful offered for students,” said Athletic Director Larson. “This program gives students a chance to compete, improve their skills and be part of a team, while enjoying a sport that will be with them for a lifetime. Tom Moen will be an excellent mentor and coach for our students as he works to get this program established and growing.”
