The Math Department at Mayville State University hosted a high school math meet on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2024. Thirty-six students and nine coaches from area schools attended the event. Students participated in three individual tests and two team tests, earning points for their team by answering questions correctly. Teams consisted of four students in grades 11 and 12. Teams also participated in a competition called Kahoot!, which is a game-based learning platform with questions created by the meet organizers.
The award for top individual score was presented to Brody Johnson, a senior at Hatton Eielson High School. The second highest individual score was earned by Cooper Handly, a junior at Hatton Eielson. The next top scores were earned by Jacob West from Thompson High School and Sadie Aamodt from Larimore High School.
Team points were accumulated during both the individual tests and the team tests, with Hatton Eielson winning the team championship. Team members were Brody Johnson, Hannah Scholand, Cooper Handly, and Rylan Wamstad. The team was coached by Christopher Strand. Thompson placed second as a team, with Kaden Bittner, Jailin Avdem, Jacob West, and Alexa Gauderman. Their coach was Tara Shirek. The team from May-Port CG, coached by Adam Sola, placed third with team members Emma Dockter, Parker Strand, Jacob McClenahen, and Kiaza Carlson.
The Kahoot! champion was the team from Thompson, followed by Northwood in second place. North Team members were Alora Berke, Gage Geier, Keegan Schroeder, and Elizabeth Pinke. Hatton Eielson placed third.
Mayville State University President Dr. Brian Van Horn, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Brian Huschle, and Enrollment Center Assistant Director Jim Morowski addressed the students during the awards ceremony, welcoming them to Mayville State University. Students were encouraged to continue taking math classes as part of their future studies.
Area schools attending the meet were Central Valley, Finley-Sharon, Hatton, Hillsboro, Hope-Page, Larimore, May-Port-CG, Northwood, and Thompson. The math meet was organized and hosted by Mayville State mathematics professors Taylor Simon, Fred Strand, and Mary Townsend with assistance from Mayville State Math Club members and students enrolled in math courses on campus.
