Carey Haugen, dean and assistant professor in Mayville State University’s Division of Nursing, is one of 15 North Dakota University System (NDUS) faculty members who were recently awarded $1,000 scholarships through the Dakota Digital Academy. The scholarships are to be used to attend and participate in conferences or professional development experiences involving artificial intelligence (AI). The scholarships were established to encourage professional learning and AI implementation in college classrooms.

The Mayville State University Division of Nursing will use the financial award to allow four nursing faculty members to participate in the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) AI Quick Study Series. The purpose of these courses is to equip educators with the foundational knowledge and skills needed to utilize AI in the classroom efficiently, effectively, and ethically.

Carey Haugen and Donna Craigmile, assistant professor of nursing, serve as the chairs of the Division of Nursing Curriculum and Assessment Committee (CAC) for the graduate and undergraduate committees respectively. From a CAC perspective, the skills learned from these modules will be incorporated directly into nursing curriculum, specifically learning effective methods for promoting AI and how to foster responsible use of AI tools within the Mayville State Division of Nursing.

Haugen and Craigmile teach the graduate and undergraduate health informatics courses at Mayville State. The skills learned from the AI Quick Study Series will be incorporated directly into the courses and will include the ability to efficiently develop course resources and how to develop AI student learning experiences. Currently, the Division of Nursing is already working to add AI content and AI assignments into the informatic courses.

“All nursing courses and students will benefit from faculty members completing this course work,” said Carey Haugen. “The Division of Nursing firmly believes all students should be taught how to utilize AI effectively and ethically in course work to prepare students for the world ahead.”
