Progress Snapshot

Take a look at the major work currently underway in the Old Main renovation project!
A portion of the north wall of the building is being replaced. Why? Years of water dripping from the roof and onto the wall have caused the brick to deteriorate. Replacement of the brick will create a stronger wall and help to ensure that the building endures well into the future.
Before removal could begin, a team of engineers, architects, and others had to put their heads together to make sure the building would remain stable during demolition and reconstruction of the wall.
Footings were poured on the basement level, then a scaffolding unit that helps to support the weight above was brought in and placed on the footings. On each of the floors above that, beams have been put in place to bear weight. This thoughtful and well-planned system is supporting more than 19 tons of weight that accumulates from top to bottom of the building!
Outside, an elaborate scaffolding system is helping to raise and lower workers as they removed and now will replace brick. Much of the brick could be removed by hand, but in some places, tools were needed. This same exterior scaffolding system was used when building the addition on the west end of the building. When work on the north wall is finished, the scaffolding will be moved to the east end to assist workers as the east addition is built.
It is fascinating to see all that is going into the project and to consider the technical expertise required to get it done. Amazing!
Many thanks to all the incredible people who are bringing the dream of an Old Main for the 21st century and beyond to life!

Project Overview
During the 2023 North Dakota legislative session, Mayville State University was granted $52 million to renovate Old Main. The renovation project will modernize this historic building, providing state-of-the-art classroom facilities, greater accessibility, and better efficiency. Students, staff, and faculty will enjoy more classroom and communal space. The renovation honors Old Main's legacy as a cornerstone of the Mayville State University campus, while growing with us into the future as we continue to meet the needs of our students and prepare them for success in the classroom and beyond.
Mayville State University selected Adam Peterson and Steve Skoblik with Foss Architecture + Interiors to lead the renovation. Additionally, PCL Community Contractors is the CMaR.
The completion date for the renovation is July 1, 2026.
