Reunion of Athletes Coached by Al Holmes

It’ll be fun! It’s time to re-unite! It will be a blast! Mayville State’s Alumni Association is honoring Al Holmes by inviting all of his former coaches and players, football and wrestling, to return for a reunion during Homecoming 2008, scheduled for the weekend of October 10-11.

As part of the halftime activities during Saturday's football game, all coaches and players acknowledging Coach Holmes will be asked to join him on the field in tribute. Following the game, a social will be held at the KT Hall in Portland. Food and beverages will be available.

Al Holmes came to Mayville State University as head football and wrestling coach in 1978 and coached both sports through 1986. During his tenure, Holmes was well known for the examples he set while helping young student athletes who were striving to perform to the best of their abilities. Numerous players lived in Al’s basement over the years ... he never turned anyone away. Maybe you were one of them.

Jerome Tappe, currently general sales manager of Nereson’s, a car dealership in Detroit Lakes, Minn., speaks strongly about the respect that the players had for Holmes. Tappe, who played defensive end, referred to him as always being a “straight shooter.”

Friend and former athletic director, Marty Johnson concurs, “One of his greatest strengths in coaching was the treatment of his players. He was an advocate for all.”

Holmes worked with many assistant coaches during his tenure. Pierre DuCharme, Rocky Gullickson (now with the Green Bay Packers), Curt Almlie, Dave Dakken, Dave Hendrickson, Chuck Gremmels, and others regarded him as an outstanding leader and an exemplary person. Several of them will be attending.

Reunion of All Former Mayville State Female Athletes

The Mayville State Alumni Association Board believes that recognition of Mayville State’s former female athletes is long overdue. A reunion of these women is being planned for Mayville State’s Homecoming 2008. All former Mayville State female athletes are encouraged to come “home” to Mayville State for an opportunity to get together with old friends and reminisce about times during their time at Mayville. Mayville State’s former female student athletes will be recognized during the halftime festivities at the football game on October 11. After the game, please come and share a story or a laugh at the KT Hall in Portland, from 5:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m.

If you plan to attend the reunion, please notify the Alumni Association by calling 1-800-437-4104, ext. 34687 or e-mailing alumni_mail@mayvillestate.edu.
