Game Summary
The Mayville State University women’s basketball team came into their match-up with Dakota State University in need of a win. The lady Comets got just that on Thursday, January 28, 2010 with a balanced attack winning the game 84-76.
The Comets had 5 girls score in double figures in the contest. Danielle Guilbert led the way with 18 points. Guilbert also had 4 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block. After Guilbert the Comets got 17 points from Misti Olson and Ali Sonstelie. Olson was a playmaker all game long by driving the ball to the basket and finding her teammates for open shots. Olson finished with 17 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds. She also went 4-5 from the free throw line.
Ali Sonstelie had a solid game with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Ali did a great job defending the Trojans post players and pulled down some very tough rebounds in the lane. She shot 3-3 from the free throw line and 6-9 from the field tonight. She was also tough on defense picking up 2 blocks and altering many shots in the lane.
Erin Ericson was another Comet to hit double figures finishing with 16 points. Erin hit some big three’s in the second half to build and keep momentum. She did a great job being aggressive to the basket and getting to the free throw line going 7-10 from the line in the contest.
Lindsay Sannes rounded out the bulk of the Comet points with a solid 10 point, 6 rebound performance. Sannes played aggressive all game and hit some big jump shots in the second half. She also played tough, physical defense in the paint ultimately leading to her fouling out with 5 minutes to play.
Kelli Smart had a nice game for the Comets tonight as well. While she didn’t get into the books scoring she dished out 5 assists and played good sound defense. Kelli did a good job directing traffic and getting open opportunities for the offense.
The Lady Comets did a great job on defense forcing the Trojans into 16 turnovers tonight. Danielle Guilbert had 2 of the Comets 5 steals. Mayville State did a good job finding teammates for open shots finishing with 19 assists against just 11 turnovers. After Kelli Smart’s 5 assists Misti Olson and Danielle Guilbert had 4 assists each.
The Trojans were led in scoring by Donna Lavea whose game-high 21 points kept them in the game. Lavea was very tough inside drawing fouls on our post players and creating openings for her teammates. She finished with 21 points on 8-11 shooting with 7 rebounds and a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line.
As a team Mayville State shot 22-32 from the free throw line for a 69% rate. Dakota State went 15-19 from the line in the close game.
The win tonight was big for the confidence of our girls and we’ll look to use this to get rolling and finish the year strong. There are a lot of games left and the Comet women are not done yet. Mayville State (6-14, 1-7) have two road games coming up next weekend against Minot and Dickinson State.
