Game Summary
South Dakota Tech hung on to win against Mayville State University 48-28 on Saturday afternoon in a shootout at Jerome Berg Field in Mayville.
In a game that featured more than 1,000 yards of total offense, individuals stood out on both sides.
MSU quarterback Jake McClain finished the game with 451 passing yards and four touchdown passes, two of them to wide receiver Chris Williams. Williams had an incredible day as well, catching 12 passes for 202 yards.
The Comets did a great job of controlling the clock for much of the day, but the Hardrockers were able to throw in some quick strikes through the air and on the ground to put up points quickly.
SD Tech running back Jamie Dale sprung loose for touchdown runs of 80 and 64 yards, finishing the game with a total of 232 yards rushing. Tech quarterback Nick Russell did the same through the air, connecting on touchdown passes of 52, 32, and 22 yards.
The visitors got on the scoreboard first with a field goal and the Comets would take the lead from SD Tech later in the first quarter when McClain and Wiliams hooked up for a touchdown strike from 9 yards out.
McClain kicked a field goal later to make the score 9-3, but Tech went off for three straight scores through the air to go into halftime with a 24-9 advantage.
The Comets would score twice to open up the second half and cut the lead to 24-22, but that's when Dale scurried for touchdown scores of 64 and 80 yards to widen the gap again at 38-22.
McClain would hook up with Andrew Marciel to make the score 38-28, but the two point conversion failed. Tech would add a field goal and another late touchdown for the final score.
