Mayville State University head football coach Nathan Chin will begin his second season at the helm of the Comets football program in 2009.
"This is a great opportunity to keep the football program moving forward from the foundation that has been built over the past few years," Chin said. "I am very excited about the student-athletes we have in the program because they understand that hard work, commitment, character, and teamwork are important for a team to be successful."
Chin was an integral part of helping turn around the Comets program over the past three seasons.
"I would like to thank Mike Moore and the administration for this opportunity and also thank the community and university for its continued support in Mayville State Athletics," Chin said.
Prior to coming to Mayville State he coached and taught in the HPE department at Southern Oregon University, an NAIA school located in Ashland, OR. Chin was the wide receivers and tight ends coach for the SOU Raiders from 2001 to 2006. He was a part of two National Playoff teams that reached the Quarterfinals in 2001 and 2002. He also spent two years in the program as a quarterback after transferring from Linfield College his freshman year.
Chin earned his Math/Business degree in 2003 and Health and Physical Education master's degree in 2005 from Southern Oregon University. Also during his time coaching football at SOU he was the assistant head softball coach, coaching primarily the pitchers and outfielders in 2002 and 2003.
As a three-sport athlete at Lost River High in Klamath Falls, OR, he was the 1997 Souther Cascade League Player of the Year and a Class 2A all-state selection after passing for over 1,500 yards on the 1997 state championship team. He was also an all-league basketball player and an all-state baseball player where both teams played in the state championship games.
Coach Chin lives in Mayville with his wife Lindsey, who works for Mayville State University in Enrollment Services. They have a son, Braden, who is nine months old.

Coach Schlieve will begin his second season as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Mayville State University football program in 2009.
In his first season as defensive coordinator at Mayville State Coach Schlieve saw his defensive unit lead the conference in fumbles caused and fumbles recovered. He defense was second in the conference in takeaways per game averaging 2.7 turnovers per contest.
Prior to being named the defensive coordinator at Mayville State, Schlieve was a coordinator at Beulah Public Schools (ND). He started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Wahpeton Public Schools (ND). After one year at Wahpeton he was named defensive coordinator at Pillager Public Schools (MN). Following a one-year stint as defensive coordinator at Pillager, he was named the head coach and remained there for three seasons. In September of 2005 Schlieve was named the State of Minnesota football coach of the week. After being a head high school coach for three seasons he returned to Mayville State to coach the defensive line in the spring of 2007.
Schlieve earned his undergraduate degree in education at Mayville State University with a major in elementary education and a minor in coaching, graduating magna cum laude, in 2002. He earned his graduate degree in sports management from St. Cloud State University, also graduating magna cum laude, in 2007.
A four-year letter winner in college, Schlieve was twice named Academic All Conference (DAC-10) and once named Academic All American (NAIA). He also played in the National All Star Bowl at the linebacker position in Minneapolis, Minnesota after his senior season.
Coach Schlieve resides in Mayville with his wife Cora and his sons Camdyn & Xavier.

The longest-tenured football coach at Mayville State, Gremmels has served as an assistant football coach and equipment manager for the Comets since 1995. Now in his 14th season at Mayville State, “Coach G” has coached quarterbacks, running backs, offensive line, special teams, and now the wide receivers.
A graduate from Mayville-Portland-C-G High School (1983), Gremmels broke numerous school records as the star quarterback. Gremells went on to play quarterback for Mayville State while earning a degree in business management (1987).

Bryan Sander is entering his second season coach the defensive secondary at Mayville State. He graduated from the College of Mt. St. Joseph where he also played football. He earned his degree in Business in the Fall of 2007. Coach Sander is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. |

James Gravelle is entering his 13th season of intercollegiate coaching and his first at Mayville State University as the special teams coordinator and running back coach.
Gravelle spent the past two seasons as the defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator, and linebacker coach at College of the Siskiyous, a junior college in Northern California.
While at COS, Gravelle helped place over 30 student-athletes at four-year institutions, including six here at Mayville State. In 2007 COS had the 11th ranked defense in the State of California. In 2008 Gravelle coached the nations leading tackler in the junior college ranks.
Prior to the College of Siskiyous, Gravelle spent the 2006 season at Bethel College in Kansas as the special teams coordinator, running backs coach, and tight ends coach. At Bethel he helped guide the Threshers to a 2006 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship and a birth in the NAIA National Championship Series, the first in over twenty years for the Kansas school. While at Bethel, Gravelle coached the nation’s regular season rushing leader, KCAC Offensive Player of the Year, and the Special Teams Player of the Year.
Before coaching at Bethel College, Gravelle spent nine years guiding the defensive backs and eight years as the secondary coach at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon. While in Ashland the Raiders advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championship Series twice (2001, 2002) and were the NAIA Independent Champions. In Gravelle’s tenure he has coached three finalists for NAIA Player of the Year, nine NAIA All-Americans (7 defensive backs, 1 running back and 1 return specialist), and four All-State Junior College players.
In 2001, Gravelle resurrected the Southern Oregon University softball program from a 19-year hiatus. In three years, SOU softball team won the Cascade Conference Championship and was ranked No. 16 in Nation.
Gravelle graduated from Southern Oregon University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Promotion Fitness Management. The Coos Bay, Oregon native currently resides in Mayville.

James LeClair is originally from St. Paul, Minnesota and graduated from South St. Paul High School in 1966.
LeClair began his intercollegiate football career at the University of Minnesota-Crookston while it was a 2-year university. LeClair later played college football at the University of North Dakota, where he was an All-American. As a senior he recorded 187 tackles, 3 interceptions, 4 fumble recoveries fumbles, and 11 forced fumbles. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999. After his college career, LeClair was selected in the third round of the NFL draft in 1972.
LeClair played linebacker for 12 seasons in the National Football League with the Cincinnati Bengals and he later played in the USFL with the New Jersey Generals. He spent his first two seasons in the NFL mainly as a starter on the special teams unit, but became a starter on defense in 1974 and remained so for the rest of his career, recording 10 interceptions and 10 fumble recoveries. He made the Pro Bowl in 1976 and played in the Super Bowl in 1975 against the San Francisco 49ers.
In addition to his football career, LeClair was a member of the United States Army Reserve from 1972 to 1977. In 1975, he became famous for wrestling a bear at the Cincinnati Convention Center as promotional stunt for the Army reserve during his two weeks of annual training. LeClair fought the Bear to a draw.
After his NFL career, LeClair became the head coach of the Mayville State University football team from 1986-1988. He later became the mayor of Mayville and currently runs an insurance agency in the city.

Andrew Jacobson will return to the Comets as an assistant coach after completing his playing career as a Comet in 2008.
Originally from Hutchinson, Minn., Jacobson was a standout athlete in football, basketball, and track before making the move to MSU to continue his football career.

Tyler Green returns to Mayville State University to coach in his first season as an assistant with the Comets.
Originally from Denver, Colorado, Green was a standout athlete at Ranum High School in both football and track before coming to MSU to compete at the college level.
Green has already earned a degree in Exercise Science and Sports Management with a minor in Coaching. He is currently pursuing another degree from MSU in Physical Education. |

Rakiem Rowland returns to Mayville State University after spending the 2009 season with the New Mexico Wildcats of the Arena Football League.
A native of Miami, Florida, Rowland began his college career at the College of the Sequoias in California before transferring to Mayville State University for his junior and senior seasons.
Rowland was a two-year starter and two-year All-Conference selection at Mayville State. He is currently finishing his degree in Exercise Science / Sports Management. |

Jason Cline is the newest member of the coaching staff at Mayville State University. Coach Cline will oversee the defensive line. He will begin his first full season with the Comets this fall.
Coach Cline is a native of Staples, Minnesota where he played football, basketball, and baseball for Staples-Motley High School. Coach Cline comes to Mayville State after spending the last couple years coaching high school football in Minnesota.
Coach Cline is working on finishing a degree in secondary education with a minor in coaching. Coach Cline is single and resides in Mayville. |
