MiKara Johanson is a junior from Edmore, North Dakota. She is pursuing two majors, Elementary Education and Secondary Social Science Education. MiKara's future plan is to teach in a small school in North Dakota. When asked what brought her to MSU she responded, "Coming from a small high school, Mayville State checked every box for me. I chose Mayville State because of the small class sizes and because of how welcomed I felt during my tour. I could sense the family feel almost immediately." MiKara works for Mayville State University Child Development Programs (CDP) as a substitute teacher. She is also a teacher at the CDP's after-school program, CHEERS. She says having the opportunity to work on campus is very convenient and it provides her with learning experiences she will take with her after her time at MSU. What MiKara loves about MSU is that everyone makes you feel like you belong. She believes this is what has made her successful at Mayville State....

Josh Erfle is a senior from New Salem, North Dakota. He is pursuing a degree in Business Administration and is very involved in the Collegiate DECA chapter on campus. The ability to get to know professors on a personal level and small classes sizes brought Josh to Mayville State. For him, these characteristics mean success both academically and professionally. Josh's Mayville State mentor is Dustin Olson, who has taken the time to get to know Josh and his goals. Josh also has two on-campus jobs that work well with his academic schedule. He works with Dr. Jeffrey Powell, Director of Student Life, as well as with the custodial staff.
Taylor Painter is a junior from West Fargo, North Dakota. She is pursuing majors in Biology and Allied Health. Taylor is involved Science Club, Biology Research, Band, and the Student Education Association. When asked why she chose Mayville State, Taylor said, "I toured campus and it instantly felt like a place that I could call home." Taylor loves that nobody is just a number on the Mayville State campus and that there is always someone looking out for you. She is an undergraduate research assistant in the lab of Dr. Joseph Mehus. Working together with other student research assistants, Taylor began studying mosquito population dynamics and feeding patterns last summer. Taylor says she has been able to gain so many new skills through this experience. Working for Dr. Mehus has opened the door to other research opportunities for the future as well. It’s not surprising that Dr. Mehus is one of Taylor’s Mayville State mentors. He has opened her eyes to all the possibilities present in the scientific field. She says, “I have learned so much and been given so many amazing opportunities while working with him. He acts as a voice of reason for me when things get stressful.” Taylor also has the utmost respect and admiration for Kristi Lentz, Mayville State’s former Director of Counseling and Freshmen Retention Services, who retired last summer. “She was a huge guiding light in my life,” said Taylor....
