Writing Center Mission

Reading and writing are inextricably linked to the learning process. Every subject uses both reading and writing as a way of accessing and distributing knowledge. The writing center helps students work through ideas, access their knowledge stores, and effectively put their ideas on paper. We take a rhetorical approach to the writing process, meaning that we will help you meet your specific goal for your particular audience, often in the context of an academic course. The writing center is useful for every writer, at every level, and in any discipline.

The Writing Center Offers:

  •  Writing consultants with diverse academic backgrounds.
  •  One-on-one sessions focused on brainstorming, clarifying ideas, developing drafts, revising, editing, and documentation.
  •  Thirty minute appointments that are free of charge to students, staff, and faculty.
  •  Feedback forms to send to instructors that communicate work done at the writing center.
  •  Opportunities for instructors to include the center as part of their writing assignments.

The writing center has set hours when consultants are available to writers.  You can schedule an appointment by registering with our online schedule and clicking on an available block.  Walk-in appointments are available, but we recommend reviewing the schedule and making appointments ahead of time to ensure that a consultant is available. To cancel an appointment, simply delete your appointment from the online schedule. Two hours a week, M/F from 1:00-2:00p.m. (at Mayville.myonline.com), are reserved for online appointments only.

Distance students are also encouraged to utilize the Writing Center! You can make an appointment by registering with our online schedule and clicking on an available time slot. After you make an appointment, the scheduler will give you the option to attach a document; attach your paper and add an assignment title. We will fit you into a 30-minute time slot with a tutor in the same way we do for on-site appointments, but we will do the tutoring through e-mail, Skype, or Blackboard IM according to your preference. Please make sure to attach the paper before the appointment time so everything is on schedule. Appointments are FREE to students. To cancel an appointment, simply delete your time slot from the online scheduler. Two hours a week, M/F from 1:00-2:00p.m. (at Mayville.myonline.com), are reserved for online appointments only.

When You Arrive At Your Appointment

Please bring your assignment rubric and class materials. For example, if you are writing a paper for an English course, please bring the assignment prompt, course text, and most recent draft with you. Paper copies of drafts are strongly preferred so we can make notes during the session. When you begin the appointment, the consultant will ask for more information about the assignment in order to see where you are in the writing process. The consultant will read your work and discuss your writing with you. Feel free to ask questions and take ownership of your work! A writing center appointment should be a conversation, not a one-sided lecture. After your appointment, you will have the option to make another appointment and/or send your instructor a feedback form.

If you are unable to make your appointment, please notify your consultant ahead of time so we can open up that timeslot to other writers.
