In honor of Women’s History Month, a concert featuring music by all female composers will be Tuesday, March 31 at 7:00 p.m. in the Classroom Auditorium at Mayville State University. The Women in Music program, which contains music in nearly every genre, will showcase Mayville State students, a local female musical theater group the Drama Queens, Miaoqian Lui on French horn, Greta Paschke on clarinet and piano, and May-Port community members.
A contest to boost the voices of female composers from the upper Midwest will be held. Winners will be invited to have their music performed. (More information about the competition can be seen below.)
Some of the other composers who will be showcased are Clara Schumann, Ethel Smyth, Florence Price, Lili Boulanger, Lisa Lambert, Joan Baez, Dolly Parton, Doris Akers, Lilian Hardin Armstrong, Gail Smith, Teresa Carreño, and Cecile Chaminade.
The Women in Music Concert, honoring the music by and for women, is in its fifth year at Mayville State University. It is co-sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the MSU Music Department. Freewill donations will be taken at the door to support Mayville State University Music Department events.
Composition Competition Information
Females of any age are eligible to submit a musical composition in any genre. Including the theme “Raising Our Voice” in the composition is welcomed, but not mandatory. Women under the age of 18 must have a consent form signed by a parent or guardian.All participants are invited to attend the event by their own means and at their own cost. There is no entry fee. Submissions must be made by March 23, 2020.
A panel will review compositions and award prizes to the top two compositions. Each will receive $150 and have their new compositions premiered at the Women in Music Concert March 31, 2020. It is expected winners will be present at this concert in Mayville, North Dakota at 7:00 p.m. Winners will be announced by March 25, 2020.
