B.S. Elementary Education

Accreditation and Framework

The Teacher Education Program at Mayville State University is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Our conceptual framework theme is The Reflective Experiential Teacher. The theme is based upon established learning concepts that students develop and demonstrate in their coursework, field experiences, and student teaching. The program includes a student cohort system with three field experiences – Nature Trail; Teaching & Learning Center Fourth Grade; and School-based – that integrate all program elements. Candidates are taught to use a variety of research-based instructional strategies (e.g., multiple intelligences; learning styles; inquiry; cooperative learning; problem-based learning; journaling) as well as multiple performance-based assessment practices (e.g., journal reflections; tests; rubrics).

Diversity and Technology

Studies of multicultural and global perspectives are required in candidates’ general, content and professional coursework. In addition to successfully completing the Information Technology (IT) Certificate Program, candidates must create an electronic portfolio showcasing their ability to demonstrate content, pedagogical and professional knowledge, based upon the Interstate New Teachers Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) principles. The portfolio is reviewed and scored by three individuals; the candidate meets with the reviewers to discuss the artifacts and reflective rationales that have been chosen to showcase the ten INTASC Principles (e.g., meaningful content; child development; learning styles/diversity; planning for instruction). The reviewers determine whether or not the evidence reflects the INTASC premise that: An effective teacher must be able to integrate content knowledge with the specific strengths and needs of students to assure that all students learn and perform at high levels.
