Voyages of Discovery

Voyages of Discovery

Voyages of Discovery 2008, Mayville State University’s privately funded art and literary journal, invites MSU student visual artists and creative writers to submit their work for its annual competition. Cash prizes will be awarded for medalists and runners up in each category. Creative writers, please contact Dr. Carolyn Baker for details and entry forms. Visual artists may have an opportunity for a hands-on workshop with MSU alumnus artist Doug Anderson during Spring Semester. Please contact Dr. Mitzi Brunsdale for details and entry forms. Deadline for submissions will be March 1, 2008.

Qualifications

  • Competition: Competition is open to all Mayville State students enrolled for at least one semester of the 05-06 academic year.
  • Submission Deadlines: Entries must be submitted by March 3, 2006. Each writer or artist may submit up to three entries.
  • Creativity: Written and visual texts should be creative, intelligible, tasteful, non-offensive, and original.
  • Return of Manuscripts: All award-winning entries, both written and visual, become property of Mayville State University.
  • Use of Copyrighted Material: The use of copyrighted materials, whether in whole or part, is strictly forbidden.

Judging and Prizes

  • Judging: Entries will be juried by community representatives unconnected with Mayville State University.
  • Prizes: First Medalist in both visual art and written text will receive $100, publication, and a certificate.

    Honorable Mention in both visual art and written text will receive $25 (may be more than one each), publication, and a certificate.

Written Texts

  • Length: Written texts should not exceed 300 words produced in Roman 12 font.
  • Topic: "Voyages of Discovery" is the theme. Your piece should creatively illustrate the meanings you find as you discover your self, your world, and that of others.
  • Genre: You may choose to express yourself in the varieties of poetry (free-verse, fixed form, stanzaic) and/or short fiction.

Visual Texts

  • Format: Entries must be two-dimmensional (unframed). Maxmimum size 12" x 18".
  • Media: Pastel, colored pencil, ink, oil paints, pencil, watercolor, or charcoal pencil.
  • Content: No computer-generated art work, no photography, no adaptations of copyrighted art work or photos. Content of work must be appropriate to be viewed by all ages.
