Internships - Students

What is an Internship?

A work experience related to your field of study. You receive academic credit for the experience, and the positions are usually paid (some non-profit organizations may only be able to offer an unpaid experience). The jobs can be one semester, more than one semester, or summer only. They can be full-time or part-time. An internship can usually be arranged to fit your individual course scheduling.

Why should you be planning an Internship experience?

  • EXPERIENCE RELATED TO YOUR MAJOR . . . . employers expect it!
  • A new perspective to classroom instruction through on-the-job training and experience.
  • Develop self-confidence, professional skills and a better understanding of human relations.
  • Earn wages which will help defray college expenses.
  • Make professional contacts which could lead to permanent employment with your internship employer or other professionals in your internship employer’s network.

How do you get hired for a Internship position?

  1. Complete a simple one-page application (found in the MyMSU Portal).
  2. E-mail your completed application to the Internship staff and schedule an appointment with them.
  3. Internship staff will work with you to identify internship prospects. Consistently check the MSU Jobs Network for posted internships. We will show you how to prospect and research on your own, also. We have provided links to a number of internship-related websites on our Internship Links for Students page. Finding your “dream internship” should be a team effort between you and the Internship staff. Remember, you may have a job search network (friends, relatives) already established that is easy for you to tap into!
  4. Apply to any and all internship opportunities that are identified.
  5. Once you are successful in getting that dream-job offer, contact the Internship staff to get registered for Internship credit. Registration should take place before each semester's "last day to register". Students must be registered for Internship credit during the same period that the work experience is taking place. Registration "after the fact" is not allowed.
