1997 Graduate of Mayville State • Degree in Chemistry

Pulmonologist & critical care physician at University of Minnesota

Chemistry

This major provides the student with the knowledge, skills and techniques commensurate with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. The student pursuing this degree may plan a professional or industrial vocation or pursue a graduate degree. MSU Chemistry/Chemistry Education students can expect to spend a lot of quality time working in the laboratory. Our Chemistry program boasts small class sizes, direct instruction and continuity from class to lab. These benefits will directly impact your future should you choose to attend graduate school, lead a research project or educate students in a public school setting.

Composite in Chemistry Education

This major provides a student with the knowledge and skills essential for teaching science courses. Students are provided with a broad base of knowledge which permits certification as junior and senior high school science teachers in North Dakota. Students who plan to teach in Minnesota need to complete an additional six semester hours in physics in order to qualify for certification.

Biology

Mayville State University's Biology students get the attention and experience they deserve. In MSU's biology program, time in the laboratory and research opportunities are not restricted to post-graduate students. Undergraduate students are our focus, and it shows.

Medical Laboratory Science

Create. Solve. Explore. Discover. As a clinical laboratory scientist, you'll be helping to solve today's and tomorrow's medical mysteries. The tests you perform to analyze blood, urine, tissue or other body specimens using sophisticated instruments, along with your specialized knowledge and learned techniques, will provide the information doctors need in diagnosing illness. Mayville State offers a B.S. degree in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) in collaboration with the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. This degree will articulate into advanced degree programs for the MLS.

Nursing

Nurses are in demand nationwide. In North Dakota, nearly every community has openings for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs). Students can enroll in the pre-requisite courses leading to a nursing degree through Mayville State University. When the pre-requisite courses are complete, they may apply for acceptance into the Dakota Nursing Program offered through Lake Region State College (LRSC). Mayville State partners with LRSC in an arrangement whereby their nursing courses are offered on the Mayville State campus. The Dakota Nursing Program offers degrees in practical nursing and associate degree nursing.

Plasmid Science

In collaboration with a local biotechnology-based business, Mayville State University is providing students with the excellent opportunity to receive a certificate of completion (14 credits) in plasmid science. This certificate is intended to provide the student with the critical knowledge and the skill set needed to begin a career in the biotechnology industry. The program has been developed so that a group of students will go through the program together.

Pre-Professional Programs

Some find it convenient to complete the first years of college at Mayville State before transferring to other institutions for advanced specializations. No specific baccalaureate degree is required for entry into many of the common professional programs, but careful planning is imperative for successful matriculation. All students should be aware that specific requirements for professional schools vary and change over time. To make the transition as smooth as possible, students are urged to plan carefully with an academic advisor at Mayville State University while consulting with the institution to which they plan to transfer. Common pre-professional opportunities offered through the science programs at MSU include chiropractic, criminal justice, dentistry, engineering, medical laboratory science, medical mortuary science, nursing, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy and veterinary science.

Science Minors

The General Science minor can be readily adapted to fulfill middle school endorsement requirements. Middle school endorsement in science requires completion of 24 semester hours in science. Of these 24 semester hours, a minimum of six hours must be in biology/life science and six hours must be in earth science (astronomy or geology), and a minimum of four hours each in chemistry and physics. Mayville State also offers minors in Biology/Biology Education, Science for the Elementary Teacher and Physical Science/Physical Science Education.
