University Overview

Mayville State University was established as a normal school in 1889 to prepare teachers. While the University maintains that historical mission, other programs are available to prepare students for careers in business, computer information systems, health & physical fitness, and for continuing study in professional and graduate schools. Mayville State University is a fully accredited four-year public institution, located in Mayville, North Dakota (population 2,500). The University is one of the smallest public baccalaureates in the nation. The University has been among the first in the nation to infuse three research-based teaching strategies – cooperative learning (1992-1995), critical thinking (1999-2002) and problem-based learning (2002-2005) across the curriculum in all five divisions (i.e., Teacher Education & Learning Resources; Business & Computer Information Systems; Health & Physical Education; Liberal Arts; Science & Mathematics). In 1996, the University began the laptop initiative, providing all faculty and students with laptop computers. In 2004 the University was the nation’s first Tablet PC campus with the adoption of Gateway Tablet Laptops. The Princeton Review has named Mayville State University “A Best Midwestern College.”

Mayville State University’s philosophy of continuous improvement maintains that strategic planning and assessment are not discrete, but interrelated and continuous. A primary goal is to support the institutional mission through an ongoing process of improved student learning. This process is designed to create lifelong learners who are equipped with the tools necessary to maximize their academic, career, and life potentials. Improved student learning is the basis for nearly everything we do.

Mayville State University’s formal governance structure develops policy consistent with mission, vision, and purpose. The President’s Cabinet, Faculty Association and Senate, Staff Association and Senate, and Student Senate make policies for their respective constituencies. Collectively, these groups guide the activities of the University. Mayville State University’s Institutional Improvement and Assessment Committee (IIAC) is the official campus-wide assessment committee, composed of representatives from all aspects of the University. This committee reviews and monitors the assessment activities of the University to ensure that they relate directly to mission, vision, and purpose and result in the continuous improvement of student learning.
