The purpose of accreditation is to assure high quality education to students. Voluntary accreditation in higher education has existed for nearly 100 years and has two primary purposes: quality assurance and institutional and program improvement.
The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association evaluates the entire campus and accredits it as a whole. It assesses governance and administration, organizational effectiveness, student academic achievement, resources, student services, and relationships with outside constituencies.

Mayville State University's teacher education program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The primary mission of NCATE is to help ensure that all children in America are in the hands of caring, competent, and qualified teachers. NCATE exists to improve the preparation of the nation's teachers, educational leaders, and other professional specialists.
Both NCATE and Mayville State University recognize that graduates, parents, schools, and community organizations have valuable perspectives on the quality of the programs that prepare teachers and other school personnel.
