Comets Advance to Championship Game

Mayville State advanced to the NAIA Division II National Championship game tonight with a 74-65 victory over Northwest College of Washington.

The Comets fell behind early 8-0 before bench scoring from junior Tremel Gilot and senior Scott Theis vaulted Mayville State to the lead. The Comets, however, trailed by 1 at the half, 34-35. Northwest started quickly in the second half, extending their lead to 52-42 with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game. But Mayville State came back. With the score Northwest 53, Mayville State 44, the Comets went on a 13-0 run to regain the lead. Mayville State maintained the lead for the remainder of the game. The Comets outscored Northwest 40-30 in the second half.

The Comets had four players in double figures led by seniors Ron Howard of Moreno Valley, CA and Matt Stenehjem of Grand Forks, ND both with 16. Senior Monty Rogers of Murray, UT had 12 points. Scott Theis, a senior from Shakopee, MN had 10.

Ron Howard and senior Chris Reinhardt of Sharon, ND shared the rebounding lead for the Comets with 7 boards each.

Head coach Craig Smith has Mayville State on the verge of a national championship. He has led the Comets to the NAIA National Tournament in each of his three years at the helm. Smith also served as an assistant coach under Tim Miles when the Comets qualified for the national tournament in 1997.

With the win, The Comets improve to 27-8 on the year and advance to the NAIA National Championship game set for tomorrow night at 8:30 to face MidAmerica Nazarene (KS).
