Comets Advance to NAIA Final Four

In the quarterfinal round of the 2007 NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship on Saturday, March 10, Mayville State held off Cedarville University 82-81, to make their first ever Final Four appearance.

Both teams started out the game at a torrid pace. Then the Comets took the lead (35-34) for good with just under six minutes in the first half. The Comets shot very well again, with 55~% in the first half. This included a 13-1 run that eventually put them up 53-42 at the break.

The Cedarville Yellow Jackets fought their way back into the game halfway through the second half, cutting the lead to two points, and later just one with under four minutes to play in the game. In the last ten seconds of the game, Cedarville’s Eric Leininger missed a wide open three-pointer for a chance to put the Yellow Jackets ahead.

The Comets had four players score in double digits for the second straight night. They were again led by seniors Ron Howard and Monty Rogers. Howard recorded 26 points and seven rebounds, while Rogers scored 20 and grabbed 8 rebounds. Rogers is leading the tournament in scoring. He’s amassed a total of 80 points in the three games so far. Matt Stenehjem had a solid night with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Tremel Gilot chipped in 12 points for the Comets.

The Yellow Jackets were led Ricardo Alliman, who scored 16 points on a flawless shooting night. Alliman was 5 for 5 from the field and 6 for 6 from the charity stripe. Guy Rathmell and Eric Leininger scored 12 points each for Cedarville. The Yellow Jackets ended their season with a 23-8 record.

The Comets now will face #16 Northwest (WA) in the Final Four on Monday, March 12 at 6:00 p.m. The Comets will be attending the NAIA Final Four Banquet on Sunday, March 11 and resting up for a run at the national championship.
