Comets Outlast William Penn

In the first round of the 2007 NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship, #13 Mayville State defeated William Penn University (IA), 101-86. The final game of the opening round at Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks was full of fouls and free throw attempts.

The two teams were whistled for a total of 65 fouls, William Penn committing a new tournament record of 41 fouls. Overall, 86 free throws were attempted. The Comets traded baskets with the Statesmen until midway through the first half and never surrendered the lead. Tremel Gilot finished the first half with a put-back layup to put the Comets up 46-39. The Comets kept their lead to near double digits in the second half.

The Comets shot a total of 60 free throws in the game, 50 of those attempts coming in the second half. They converted only 62~~% from the line, making 37 for the game. The Comets became the first team in the tournament to surpass the 100-point mark, shooting 55~~% from the field. Monty Rogers paced the Comets with 29 points, with 12 for 14 from the field. Matt Stenehjem added 23 points, 11 from the charity stripe.

The game was won in the paint, with Rogers and Stenehjem leading the way. Scott Theis and Chris Reinhart led the team on the boards with 11 and nine rebounds respectively. Theis tallied an impressive five offensive rebounds. Rogers and Stenejhem also grabbed six boards a piece. The Comet guards did an excellent job of feeding the ball inside and handling the ball against a very high pressure defense, limiting turnovers to only nine.

The Statesmen were led by senior Ryan Norman who recorded a tournament-high 34 points. He netted 18 of his 19 free throw attempts and grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss. William Penn was playing in their first national tournament in 25 years. Their season ended with a 25-9 record.

The Comets advance to the second round of the tournament where they face Florida Memorial, who upset the #4 seed Huntington University (IN) on March 8. The Lions are led by the leading scorer in the nation, Tramaine Stevens, who averages 27.0 points per game. The game will be played 9:15 pm on Friday, March 9.
