Distance Programs Offer Exciting Opportunities for Today’s Students

Mayville State University is offering exciting new options to meet the diverse needs of today’s students. While continuing to provide high quality educational opportunities for traditional on-campus students, the university offers accessible courses and degrees via a variety of delivery methods so working adults and others have the flexibility to further their education while remaining close to their homes, families, and jobs.

Distance courses and degrees are being offered through online, interactive video, and face-to-face delivery methods. We are partnering with other colleges as well. Mayville State classes are offered at Bismarck, Devils Lake, Williston, and Wahpeton.

Mayville State University’s Office of Admissions & Extended Learning brings Mayville State’s promise of personal service to students enrolled in distance courses by serving as a central point of contact for distance students and faculty. An exciting new service that is now being offered to distance students is a distance student orientation that was initiated last spring semester. Since then, the online orientation has received more than 4,500 hits, and 380 students have explored the orientation at least once. The orientation brings a new aspect to the personal service for which Mayville State is so well-known.

Several new and exciting program options have been developed and are now available for students who wish to learn at a distance. The library credential and reading credential for licensed and/or practicing educators, as well as students pursuing degrees in education, are currently available online. Already licensed teachers now have the opportunity to earn a kindergarten endorsement and middle school endorsements through Mayville State online and at a distance, as well. In addition, bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and mathematics education are now available completely online.

A Bachelor of University Studies degree is also now available online. The B.U.S. degree provides flexibility for students who wish to custom tailor the content of their degrees rather than pursue specific majors. Each student designs a program leading to specific educational goals, but not necessarily within any one department. Any coursework previously earned from regionally accredited two- or four-year institutions will be accepted and applied to the B.U.S. core requirements, general education, optional minor, and electives, as appropriate, regardless of the academic program in which the student was previously enrolled.

Students within driving distance of the Mayville State campus who wish to earn a bachelor’s degree in elementary education now have the best of both worlds available to them. A new cohort for students pursuing the elementary education evening option will begin in August. Courses will be offered online and in the evening on the Mayville State campus. The student cohort system and two field experiences integrate all program elements. Candidates will be taught to use a variety of research-based instructional strategies as well as multiple performance-based assessment practices.

A number of new courses have recently been developed for online delivery. They include Augmented and Alternative Communication, Remedial Reading, Remedial Reading Practicum, Reading in the Content Area, Foundations of Middle School, Middle School Methods, Seminar on Success, and Sport Psychology. Courses currently in the development phase include Fundamentals of Public Speaking, Composition I, Evaluation of Psychomotor Performance, Trigonometry, Probability and Statistics, Algebraic Structures with Programming for Majors, Intro to Sociology, and Second Year Spanish II.

These new offerings are in addition to a whole host of courses and degree programs offered at a distance through Mayville State. Other distance degree programs offered at MSU are the Bachelor of Science in business administration, Bachelor of Science in Education in elementary education, and Bachelor of Science in Education in early childhood. Degrees that are being offered exclusively online are the Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in business administration and the Associate of Arts or Bachelor of Arts in early childhood.

At Mayville State, we take pride in giving students a little more of just about everything. Our new flexible and convenient degree programs and course options are a testament to this. We’d love to tell you more about what we have to offer.
