Berge hits clutch shots in final minute as Mayville State defeats No. 23 Sioux Falls

The Mayville State University Comet men's basketball team hosted the University of Sioux Falls Cougars on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse. The Comets were hot of a home sweep of CMU and knew they had a very tough test ahead of them.

Micah Berge led all Comets with 18 points. Berge was 4-7 from three point land including a huge three with less than 30 seconds left to give the Comets a lead. Shortly after Berge gave the Comet's the lead and seemingly all the momentum, USF silenced the gym and took it back. Jack Ridgeway caught a pass in the corner and hit go-ahead three with under 15 seconds left.

Berge was able to get to the free throw line on the next Comet possession drawing the fifth foul on USF's De'Shawn Howard. Berge calmly sunk both clutch free throws to give the Comets a one point lead. Mayville had to rely on their defense to come through for the win, and it did. Thomas Frames had his shot was altered and rebounded by Ross Aman. Aman was immediately fouled and sent to the line with a one point lead and three seconds left on the clock. Like Berge, Ross hit both free throws to extend the lead to three points.

The Cougars were left with three seconds left and a three point deficit. Thomas Frames desperation three as time expired was off and Mayville State came away with a huge non-conference win in front of a crowd of Comet fans in their best Halloween outfits.

Leading all scorers was USF's Matt Malloy. Malloy had 24 points on the night, including 11-13 from the free throw line. Malloy was followed in scoring by Thomas Frames' 18 points and De'Shawn Howard with 10 points.

Mayville State shot 77~% from the free throw line, lead by Alfonzo McNeal going 8-9 from the charity stripe. Balanced scoring was a big factor in this game for Mayville State. Four Comets were in double figures on the night lead by Micah Berge's 18. Alfonzo McNeal had 16, Marcus Carson and Anton Coleman each added 11.

After being out the first two games, Anton Coleman and David Slezak saw their first action of the season against the Cougars and didn’t disappoint. The two added nineteen points off the bench as Slezak scored 8 points in his Comet debut.

Brad Sand led all Comets in rebounds with 13 in the game. He came up with 4 big offensive rebounds in the second half. His effort and presence in the paint on defense was big for the Comets. The Comets won the rebounding battle with USF 36-31.

It was a very Happy Halloween for all involved with Comet men's basketball. Mayville State (3-0) hosts Briar Cliff University on Monday, November 2, 2009 at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse at 3:00 PM.
