The Comets gained some valuable experience last year both on and off the basketball floor, playing six freshman and two sophomores. Although they struggled at times, they showed gradual improvement over the course of the year.
The Comets will return 11 players from last year’s team, including all five starters. The Comets’ top ten players from last year return along with a key veteran returning player. The Comets look to be much deeper than last season and much more athletic.
Mayville State will be led by three seniors. Lindsay Sannes, Danielle Guilbert, and Ali Sonstelie all return for their senior season. The Comets will lean heavily on these three for leadership and quality of play. Sannes and Guilbert were key members in the Comets' run to the DAC Championship game in 2008.
Kelli Smart will be an anchor for the team as the starting point guard and leader on and off the floor. Smart will return for her junior season.
“I feel we have great leadership from our upper classmen,” head coach Dennis Hutter said. “They play hard every day out.”
The Comets return quite a few sophomores to this year’s team. The sophomore class is led by Erin Ericson and Kelsey Adamsen. Both of these players gained valuable minutes last season as freshmen, and will be counted on to contribute in a major way to this year’s team. Katelyn Peters also started numerous games for the Comets last season in the post, and will once again be relied upon to contribute this season as well. The Comets will also need production from Misti Olson and Kelli Boekelheide.
“I really like our sophomore class. They have worked very hard this off season to improve their skills and make us a better team,” Hutter said. “This class went through a lot last year, but the experience they gained hopefully will show this year.”
The freshman class will also be relied upon to step up and play some minutes this year. This class consists of Abby Berven, Laura Taylor, Betsy Smith, Maddi Lamb, Jess Pearce and Allison Aaland.
“Our freshman class will have to learn on the fly and try to pick up what they need to understand so they can make a positive contribution to this year’s team,” Hutter said.
The Comets also have two solid recruits that will be red-shirting this season. Melanie Russell (Larimore, ND) and Elixanette Cosme-Gonzalez (Denver, CO). Melanie will have four years remaining, and Elixanette will have two years remaining.
The Comets will open the season this weekend as they play Canadian Mennonite University both Friday and Saturday night. Both games will start at 5:30 p.m. The Comets will also play on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. against Brandon University.
