Mayville State University Street to be Named for Stan Dakken

Mayville State University officials have announced that College Drive will be officially named for Mayville State University and city of Mayville celebrity Stanley Dakken. A ceremony recognizing the designation of Stan Dakken Drive will be held during Mayville State’s homecoming festivities on Saturday morning, October 10, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The program will be held on the lawn across the street from the northeast corner of the Mayville State Campus Center.

The current College Drive begins at the Mayville State University tennis courts, near the intersection of First Street NE and Fifth Avenue. The street runs north past the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse and makes a turn to the west at the MSU Campus Center, ending at Highway 14 near Agassiz Hall.

Stanley Dakken has been an icon on the Mayville State campus for more than sixty years. He has made many friends in Mayville State students, and has rarely missed a sporting event held at the university. He was awarded the first-ever honorary degree from Mayville State University on July 28, 2001, during a three-day celebration held in Mayville-Portland in honor of Stan’s 65th birthday. The degree conferred was a Bachelor of Humanity, with majors in kindness and good works. In part, Stan’s diploma reads, “In recognition of a lifetime of humanitarian achievements while attending Mayville State University events and participating in the greater community. The university is proud to be associated with Stanley Leroy Dakken. We hope he has learned as much from us as we from him.”
