Dr. Gary Hagen Presents President's State of the University Address

Mayville State University President Dr. Gary Hagen presented his annual State of the University Address on Wednesday morning, August 19. Highlights of the address included strategic planning updates and the large number of imporvements that are being made to campus facilities.

The Mayville State University campus has undertaken three major capital projects: coal-powered heating plant project, Agassiz Hall renovation project, and Science-Library renovation and Education Division addition.

Construction of the coal-powered heating plant, located on the west end of campus, began early in June. The building footings and floor have been poured, boilers and other equipment have been set in place, and the building’s beams are up. The plant is scheduled to be operational by November. The use of coal to heat the campus will stabilize Mayville State’s heating utility budget.

Michael J. Burns, Architects, Ltd., Moorhead, Minn., will lead the development and oversee the construction activities for the Agassiz Hall renovation project which will convert the residence hall facility from traditional to apartment-style student living space. Construction will begin early in 2010, and will be in progress for about one year.

JLG Architects, Fargo, North Dakota, will provide the architectural services and oversee the construction on the Science-Library renovation and Education addition project. Construction activities will begin next spring and continue into the summer of 2011. The addition will provide a new home for Mayville State’s Division of Education & Psychology.

A number of other projects are being planned or are underway around campus, as well. These include sidewalk replacement, construction of a restroom facility at the athletic stadium complex, replacement of doors and windows at Berg Hall and in the Classroom Building, and installation of a chiller and control system in the Classroom Building. In addition, a number of areas are being painted and carpeted, and lighting is being updated.

Dr. Hagen’s State of the University Address is held annually in conjunction with pre-service activities for faculty and staff. A full schedule of activities designed to promote team building and a sharing of ideas and information for Mayville State faculty and staff was executived August 17-21. This year’s pre-service activities were highlighted by workshops presented by Dr. Joe Cuseo, a nationally recognized and well-published researcher and educator who has worked extensively in the areas of student success, academic advising, and student retention.
