Dr. Joe Cuseo, a nationally recognized and well-published researcher and educator who has worked extensively in the areas of student success, academic advising, and student retention, will present four workshops for faculty and staff at Mayville State University, Mayville, N.D., August 17 and 18, 2009. Cuseo’s presentations are a part of the university’s annual pre-service activities held for faculty and staff prior to the beginning of classes each academic year.
Topics for Dr. Cuseo’s workshops at Mayville State are “Student Success & College Quality: What Really Matters,” “Academic Advising: The What, Why, Who, & How of It,” “Student Retention: Identifying Root Causes of Student Attrition and Systematic Strategies for Promoting Student Persistence,” and “Liberal Arts, Academic Majors, and Future Careers: Myths & Realities.” Recently retired, Joe Cuseo is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Marymount College in Palos Verdes, California. For more than 25 years, Dr. Cuseo directed the first-year seminar, a course required of all new students. He holds a doctoral degree in Educational Psychology and Assessment from the University of Iowa. Dr. Cuseo is a 14-time recipient of the “faculty member of the year award” at Marymount College. The student-driven award is based on effective teaching and academic advising. A regular columnist for a bimonthly newsletter published by the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience & Students in Transition, Cuseo has received the Resource Center’s “outstanding first-year advocate award.” He has authored many articles and monographs on the first-year experience, college success, and student diversity, as well as textbooks on diversity and for use in first-year experience courses. Dr. Cuseo has delivered more than 100 campus workshops and conference presentations. Joe Cuseo’s participation in Mayville State University’s 2009 pre-service week activities is made possible through a U.S. Department of Education Title III grant. Mayville State University was the recipient of a $1.9 million grant, announced in the spring of 2007. The three general themes of Mayville State’s grant activities are: student support services for residential and distance students; professional development for faculty and staff; and distance education course development.
