Mary Kay Iverson Honored on Her Retirement from Mayville State University

Mayville State faculty and staff, together with friends and relatives, gathered on Friday afternoon, July 10, to honor Mary Kay Iverson on her retirement from Mayville State University. Mayville State President Dr. Gary Hagen delivered remarks, as did some of Mary’s co-workers and her daughter Tami Parker.

“Mary has been a dedicated and talented employee,” said Dr. Gary Hagen. “We are grateful to her for her good work on behalf of Mayville State. We will miss Mary, and wish her much happiness in her retirement.”

Mary Iverson came to Mayville State as the secretary in the physical education department in 1977. After a year in that position, she became a clerk in the registrar’s office, working for registrar Ken Eastman. When Ken retired three years later, in 1981, Mary became the registrar. She officially retired as Director of Academic Records/Registrar on July 15, 2009.

Reflecting on her years as registrar, Mary said, “I have had an interesting journey. Remembrances include being ‘in the thick of it’ when Mayville State and Valley City State served as the test campuses for the current PeopleSoft computer system.”

Mary also remembers lots of name changes for Mayville State, highlighted by three different names in one year. “We started the fall quarter of 1986 as ‘Mayville State College,” and in the winter quarter (’86-’87), the state changed our name to ‘State University of North Dakota at Mayville’ (SUND-Mayville). In the spring of 1988, we acquired the current name of ‘Mayville State University. As registrar, it was real interesting trying to keep up with all the name changes when ordering diplomas, transcripts, forms, etc.,” said Iverson.

Mary Kay (Hanson) Iverson graduated from Mayville State in May of 1968. She taught school in Annandale, Minn. and St. Thomas, N.D. before returning to Mayville in 1977. Her husband Tom, also a Mayville State graduate, taught mathematics at May-Port High School and later at Mayville State University. Tom and Mary’s children, Kenn and Tami graduated from Mayville State as well. Kenn is a chiropractor in Jamestown, N.D. Tami is a physical therapist in Thief River Falls, Minn. Tami and her husband Scott Parker and their daughters Kinsey and Isabell live at Newfolden, Minn. Scott, also a Mayville State graduate, teaches at Marshall County Central High School in Newfolden. Tom Iverson passed away in January of this year.

“Mayville State has always been a big part of my life,” said Mary. “My first encounter was taking piano lessons way up on the third floor of Old Main when I was a young child. Growing up, our home was only a block from Mayville State, so I was able to be a spectator at most college events over the years. When we moved back to Mayville in 1977, it was a thrill to be able to move across the street from Mayville State again, and to be able to have a job there too.”

“I will really miss the wonderful people at Mayville State,” Mary commented. “It has been a great place to work. Mayville State University will always have a tender spot in my heart.”

Pam Braaten, longtime employee of Mayville State’s Office of Admissions & Records, has been named to the position of registrar as of July 16, 2009. Sharyl Hanson has taken the position of assistant registrar.
