Mayville State is changing to meet the needs of today’s students. While we continue to provide high quality opportunities and programs for traditional students, we must also meet the emerging needs of new kinds of students. Many of those who wish to further their education are employed full-time and have families, making it difficult to pursue higher education in the traditional sense of the word.
Mayville State is helping to meet the needs of traditional and non-traditional students who may be place-bound by providing accessible and accommodating program options, allowing students the flexibility to earn their degrees while remaining close to their homes, families, and jobs. We offer distance courses and degrees via a variety of delivery methods, including online, interactive video, and face-to-face, and we are partnering with other colleges to meet the diverse needs of today’s students. Mayville State University’s Office of Admissions & Extended Learning extends Mayville State’s promise of personal service to students enrolled in distance courses by serving as a central point of contact for distance students and faculty. The office serves high school students enrolled in dual credit courses, as well as non-degree-seeking students taking distance courses. The office also services distance students enrolled in the following programs: Bachelor of Science degree in business administration at Lake Region State College; Bachelor of Applied Science degree in business administration online; Associate of Arts or Bachelor of Arts degree in early childhood online; Bachelor of Science in Education degree in elementary education over interactive video at Lake Region State College, Williston State College, and North Dakota State College of Science (as well as at Mayville State); and Bachelor of Science in Education degree in early childhood education, offered online with courses completed on the Mayville State campus during the summer. The Office of Admissions & Extended Learning served more than 330 distance students during the spring semester of 2009. Since Spring 2005, more than 75 distance students have earned associate’s and bachelor’s degrees from Mayville State, and the more than 50 distance graduates in the Devils Lake region stand as a shining example of the collaborative relationship between Lake Region State College and Mayville State. Mayville State employee JoAnna Lonski is the full-time distance education coordinator for Mayville State programs on the LRSC campus. An exciting new development for the B.S.Ed. in elementary education degree program has recently emerged. Starting this fall, working adults in the Red River Valley region can come to Mayville State’s campus and complete an elementary education degree through evening and online classes as part of the distance degree cohort. This will allow working adults in our area who wish to become elementary teachers the opportunity to further their education while maintaining full-time jobs. Mayville State’s distance elementary education cohort began in partnership with Lake Region State College in 2005, and currently there are nine cohort graduates and seven students scheduled to student teach in the upcoming year. This unique program was created to provide paraprofessionals and other working adults the opportunity to earn an elementary education teaching degree while remaining close to family, work, and community. Students can take courses on a full- or part-time basis, as their schedules allow.
