  •
  • 1976 Softball Team. The 1976 Mayville State fastpich softball team defeated three-time champion North Dakota State University twice to secure the North Dakota Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women fastpitch softball title. They did so very decisively with scores of 13-6 and 10-3. Most of the Lady Comets were from North Dakota, and many of them played softball at Red Willow during the summers. They had to learn how to play fastpitch, as only the larger cities had fastpitch leagues at that time. As the district champions, the Comets earned a trip to the 8th Annual Women’s College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. The Comets lost to defending champion Nebraska-Omaha in their first game of the World Series, and to University of Oregon in the second game, thereby eliminating the Comets from the tournament. Through hard work and determination, this team of exceptional athletes accomplished great things with very little. Member of the team were Patty Puppe, Janel Rudel Gaugler, Jeri Fugleberg, Karen Moreland David, Kathy Kerlin Horbacz, Penny vonRuden Kern, Cindy Sevigny Holt, Teri Helling, and Jennifer Oby, Alice Larson Olson, Janna Hjelseth, Connie Larson, Pam Fitzsimonds Matte, Leana Loftsgard Miller, Deb Adolfsen Crowder, Kathy Scanson McCracken, and Kathy Lang Maus. The team was coached by Maxine Mehus.
  •
  • H.L. “Curley” McLain. H.L. “Curley” McLain is a Comet through and through. He has often been quoted as saying that “he bleeds Comet Blue.” McLain graduated from Mayville State in 1950, and played basketball under legendary Mayville State coach Al Meyer while a student. He became a high school coach at Hatton, N.D., where he coached multiple sports. His basketball teams won the competitive Red River Valley Conference in five of his 11 years as coach. Curley had the opportunity to mentor many athletes along the way. So many of the life lessons that he learned through sports and passed on to his athletes were “Mayville State stories” because that’s where he learned them. His steadying influence promoted athletics in general, with an unsaid bias toward Mayville State. No doubt Curley influenced all of his four sons who became Mayville State athletes and earned their degrees at Mayville State, a tradition that has now been passed along to two grandsons. Curley McLain will be the first to tell anyone about how good Mayville State has been to him. He served as coach, teacher, principal, and then superintendent at Hatton High School for 37 years, retiring in 1987.
  •
  • Ron McLain. Ron McLain was a standout student, athlete, and leader at Mayville State. He was a three-sport athlete who played football, basketball, and baseball. In 1974, Ron led the nation in batting for small colleges of the NAIA with a 507 average. He was co-captain of the baseball team and earned All American honorable mention, as well as all-North Dakota College Athletic Conference, and all-district honors that same year. McLain earned all-conference baseball honors as a junior as well. The Comets baseball team won the NDCAC baseball tournament in three of the four years in which Ron played. McLain was a starting quarterback on the Comets football team in his sophomore, junior, and senior years. A broken wrist was problematic and ended his football career at Mayville State as a senior. Ron McLain graduated from Mayville State with magna cum laude honors in 1974. He earned majors in English, physical education, and health.
  •
  • Connie Tharaldson. Connie (Green) Tharaldson was a four-sport letter-winner at Mayville State, participating in softball, volleyball, basketball, and track. She was captain of the Comets volleyball team in 1986. Tharaldson is a member of the Mayville State Athletic Hall of Fame 1984 volleyball team. Athletics has continued to be a big part of Connie’s life after graduating from Mayville State in 1987, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and biology. Following graduation she became a high school teacher and coach. She has since become a full-time mother, but has never given up her love for coaching young people. She has remained active as a coach of youth soccer, basketball, and fastpitch softball, and she currently coaches junior varsity girls basketball. Connie continues to play on and sponsor softball teams in both Fargo, N.D. and Las Vegas, Nev. Through their philanthropy, she and her husband Gary have had a major role in the recent athletic facilities improvements made at Mayville State University. Many Mayville State students are benefitting not only from the improved facilities, but also the generous scholarship assistance they are receiving.
