Mayville State University Graduate Matt Stenehjem “Pays It Forward”
Mayville State University graduate and State Bank & Trust employee Matt Stenehjem took his opportunity to “pay it forward” by making a donation to the Laurie Berry Memorial Scholarship Fund at Mayville State University. The $1,000 gift was made on Matt’s behalf by his employer, State Bank & Trust of Fargo, N.D. Matt graduated from Mayville State University in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
State Bank & Trust has made it a tradition to give every full-time employee $1,000 every year for the purpose of contributing to the needs of communities and the world. Part-time employees receive $500 every year. The bank’s total commitment to the project is more than half a million dollars for 2010. Each employee can choose how they want to use their Pay It Forward funds to help individuals, families, or organizations in need.
Longtime Mayville State University professor of education Laurie Berry is remembered as a genuinely caring woman, an inspirational teacher and the kind of person who became friends with everyone she met. She passed away July 20, 2010 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Dr. Berry earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Mayville State in 1978. She taught in elementary schools in Michigan, N.D. and Clifford, N.D. before beginning her tenure at Mayville State. She earned a doctorate from the University of North Dakota.
While Laurie lived in the same geographic area all of her life, her impact reached into the far corners of the world as her more than 100,000 Caring Bridge messages reflected. Her love of teaching was obvious and her dedication as an educator affected the lives of many students and teachers. She loved helping others learn and was masterful at it.
The Laurie Berry Scholarship Fund has been set up through the MSU Foundation as a tribute to a Mayville State graduate and professor who made a difference in the lives of countless students, colleagues, family members, and friends.
